Password Information

Here at Nebraska Wesleyan, you will have two primary credentials. One will get you into Outlook, Canvas, and the Wi-Fi. The other will get you into our on-campus computers and WebAdvisor. While it is typically good to have many different passwords, in this particular case it can be helpful to have your credentials match across these two different systems in order to reduce the amount of confusion when one of your passwords does not work. If you are concerned about security if you chose use the same password for both of these, don’t worry. You can click here to learn a few security tips.

Additional account information and general service regarding the Nebraska Wesleyan Login/Password can be obtained at the WITS Office in Smith Curtis 109. Currently, we are the office that handles all Canvas and WebAdvisor credentials information.

If you are a new student, you should have received your account information during New Student Registration in June. If you missed this meeting, your account information will be available from the Registrar’s Office (Smith-Curtis 206) upon request. As always, if you need any help with activating your accounts, don’t hesitate to visit us down at the WITS office or give us a call.

Password Security and Guidelines

Starting on June 1, 2021, NWU will have a new password policy. By clicking here you can access the policy directly, or you can keep reading.

NWU Password Requirements

NWU account passwords must comply with the following structural requirements:

  • Passwords are case sensitive.

  • Minimum password length is 12 characters

  • Maximum password length is 28 characters

  • Passwords must include at least one character from each of these character types:

    • Upper case letters

    • Lower case letters

    • Numerals (Non-sequenced, i.e. password34 is invalid)

  • Passwords have to contain at least one symbol selected from the following: - _ ! . ~ % [ ] { } * #

  • Other symbols or spaces MAY NOT be included.

In addition, your NWU account password(s) should not contain your NWU username, common dictionary words, common phrases or references (for example, “PrairieWolf” or “GoBigRed”) or use the same character three or more times consecutively.

CSIT will conduct periodic password security audits to test the strength of NWU account passwords and will notify account holders of any passwords determined to be too weak.

NWU Password Aging

NWU account passwords may remain in use no longer than 120 days. Seven days prior to the expiration of the 120-day limit, NWU account holders will receive email reminders that their account password must be changed. Reminders will continue until the account password has been changed.

If an account password has not been changed prior to the end of the 120-day period, the user account will be locked and login will be prohibited. The account will be required to reset the account password to regain access to the account.

We here at WITS we recommend changing both your WebAdvisor and your Office 365 passwords at the same time. It is common for people to have similar, if not the same password for both of these programs, and it can be confusing when suddenly one program password changes and the other remains the same. By changing both passwords at the same time, you can cut down on any confusion that may exists.
